The application of the integrative concept of construct validity helped to shape a framework for the construct validity of the FMS. Our results and rhetoric indicates that the FMS is a qualitative motor screening tool in order to investigate mobility and stability behavior of the utilized kinetic chains during elementary movement tasks. In detail, the diagnostic information is valid majorly in regard to the vertical plane locomotion of the center of gravity on an individuals’ bodyweight in a recovered state. Theoretical reasoning and empirical evidence of the conducted EMG-studies and comparative analysis with other motor screenings highlighted the insight that the motor control during the performed movement tasks is mainly initiated and regulated through the action of slow motor units. For instance, the slow movement velocity and bodyweight causes low tension on the myofascial network which is an indicator for the activation of slow-twitch fibers. In order to estimate injury risk or athletic performance the FMS items and especially the FMS sum score is not appropriate. The reasons for that are manifold. To name two the score is not valid and objective enough. In detail, our item analysis showed that the FMS operationalizes at least two constructs: mobility with a strong structural component and mobility with a strong stability component. Furthermore, the validity of the traditional concept of asymmetry is questionable.
