Performance, efficiency, operational\r\ncosts, and environmental\r\nfriendliness are important parameters\r\nin the design of modern transport\r\nairplanes and their engines.\r\nHowever, flight safety issues are\r\nnot allowed to be compromised in any\r\ncase. In this context it is of particular\r\nimportance to know the performance\r\nof transport airplanes at\r\nthe boundaries of the flight envelope.\r\nSince experimental flight\r\ntesting is expensive and very often\r\nassociated with high risk, the progress\r\nin numerical simulation in the\r\ncontext of aircraft development as\r\nwell flight testing offers new perspectives\r\nto gain better knowledge\r\nand to improve design capabilities.\r\nThe research unit “Simulation of\r\nWing and Nacelle Stall” (FOR 1066),\r\nfunded by the German Research\r\nFoundation (DFG), Airbus, and Rolls-\r\nRoyce Deutschland, is committed to\r\nmake significant contributions in\r\nthis field. It is the objective of\r\nthe research group to enhance scientific\r\nknowledge and methods for\r\nhigh-quality simulations of outer\r\naerodynamics and driven nacelles at\r\nthe boundaries of the flight envelope.\r\nThe research activities and\r\nresults related to aircraft nacelle\r\nstall and its interaction with the\r\njet engine will be presented in this\r\noverview paper.
